Remote Pools Project Update

Our Mission at Budgy Smuggler has always been to free the thighs of the world. In doing this we’ve had a pinnacle focus on building a stronger community at the forefront of everything we do, particularly in our home country Australia.  

In addition to keeping our main manufacturing base on our home soil and collaborating with some of our nation's best artists, we also work to shine a light on some of the great community organisations here in Australia. 

A stand out organisation is the Northern Territory’s ‘Remote Pools Project’ which works alongside remote Aboriginal communities to bring their local swimming pools back to life. The goal is to provide regular access to water safety education for Indigenous kids; a crucial life-skill and protector against drowning.  

 Last year we made a $100k commitment (half in cash & half in kind) to help facilitate free swimming lessons with volunteers across communities in remote Northern Territory. 

 The most recent program just wrapped up in four communities; Utju, Ltyentye Apurte, Ngukurr and Borroloola, with eight Budgy volunteer swim teachers running a variety of programs for all agesIncluding: 

 Water familiarisation for parent-baby groups 

 “Learn to swim” for early-childhood centres and schools 

 Aqua aerobics, which was free for adults in the broader community 

 The instructors volunteered not just on the pool deck but also in the classroom at all four schools in the communities.

Alongside the good that grew from this, it was also logistically one of the most challenging seasons with extreme flooding across the Territory which led to many airports and roads being cut off or impassable. Our volunteers had to flex their hamstrings and roll with the punches! 

 We’re currently working with the team at the Remote Pools Project to see how we can continue to help shine light on this incredible cause.
